"But from henceforth shall the Son of man be seated at the right hand of the power of God." — Luke 22:69 (ASV)
Luke has already indicated that Jesus was arrested during the night (v.47) and has implied that he was confronted by the authorities while in the house of the high priest (v.54). Following that was an “official” trial early in the morning. Luke summarizes the crucial exchange between Jesus and the leaders and adds a time note that it was becoming day (v.66). Matthew and Mark refer to the same time of day when the religious authorities reached a decision (Mark 15:1). Luke’s way of reporting the questioning separates the questions regarding messiahship and regarding the Son of God.
The word “Christ” (v.67) at this time had not yet become a proper name, so the question Jesus was asked is whether he was claiming to be the Messiah. Jesus answered by saying that they would not believe him even if he did answer them. He also said that if he were to question them, they would not answer (cf. 20:1–8).
Jesus continues with an assertion concerning the exaltation of the Son of Man (who must be identified with Jesus here or the saying is irrelevant); it vindicates Jesus and proves who he is. This saying in Luke stresses the fact that from that very time in Jesus’ appearance before the council, he was to be exalted (note Luke’s emphasis on “now,” the present reality of events that have their main significance in the future). Luke is concerned with the present vindication of Jesus.
