"And as they spake these things, he himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace [be] unto you." — Luke 24:36 (ASV)
Once again Luke carefully connects the events after the Crucifixion chronologically (23:54, 56; 24:1, 9, 13, 33) with the words “While they were still talking about this.” Suddenly Jesus himself “stood among them” (cf. Jn 20:19) and greeted them with a typical Semitic greeting, “Peace” (GK 1645; cf. shalom, GK 8934).
Jesus identified himself very emphatically (v.39): “It is I myself.” The methods of crucifixion varied slightly, but Jesus apparently had nails in his hands and feet. Seeing and touching would convince the disciples. As in vv.3, 23, where Luke mentions the body of Jesus, here he again draws attention to the physical aspect of the Resurrection.
