Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary Luke 5:4

"And when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught." — Luke 5:4 (ASV)

The sharp contrast between the expert but unsuccessful fisherman and Jesus needs no comment. Jesus’ command must have seemed unreasonable to them after their failure during the night. Peter, here called by his original name, Simon, demurs; but he does what Jesus says.
