Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"and he came down with them, and stood on a level place, and a great multitude of his disciples, and a great number of the people from all Judaea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;" — Luke 6:17 (ASV)
The “level place” is probably a flat area or plateau on the “mountainside” mentioned in Mt 5:1. Luke mentions a “large crowd” of Jesus’ disciples plus “a great number of people” who came to listen to Jesus. The people came to be healed and to have demons cast out , as well as to listen to his teaching. Although Jesus directed his comments to the disciples (v.20), he was surely conscious of his larger audience.
