"But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filling [with water], and were in jeopardy." — Luke 8:23 (ASV)
Jesus’ words “Let us go over to the other side of the lake” (v.22) should have assured the disciples that they would indeed complete their trip across the water. Luke mentions the fury of the wind three times (vv.23, 24, 25; see comment on Mk 4:37). Luke mentions earlier in the narrative than do Matthew and Mark that Jesus was asleep. This placement heightens the contrast between the turmoil of the storm and Jesus’ peaceful rest.
