Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary Mark 1:16

"And passing along by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net in the sea; for they were fishers." — Mark 1:16 (ASV)

Jesus must now gather around him a community whom he can teach so that they may become sharers in that message. He calls them in the midst of everyday life where they really live. God’s reign does not operate in a void.

Jesus found Simon and his brother Andrew along the shore of the Sea of Galilee. (Much of Jesus’ ministry took place near this lake.)
