Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"And as he was going forth into the way, there ran one to him, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?" — Mark 10:17 (ASV)
Jesus was continuing on his journey to Jerusalem. A man ran up to him, probably a member of some official council or court . Matthew says he was “young” (19:20). He fell on his knees before Jesus and addressed him by the revered title of “good teacher,” thus expressing his high regard for Jesus. His question indicates that he was thinking in terms of Jewish works of righteousness. He wanted to do something to merit eternal life, whereas Jesus taught that eternal life (the kingdom of God) is a gift to be received (cf. v.15).
