"And Jesus answered and said, as he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that the Christ is the son of David?" — Mark 12:35 (ASV)

Jesus was still in the temple courts. Up to this point he was being asked questions. Now he took the initiative and asked in what sense the Messiah is the son of David.
