"Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass away, until all these things be accomplished." — Mark 13:30 (ASV)
Jesus’ words in this verse are not to be taken lightly. Their interpretation hinges on the meaning of the expressions “this generation” and “all these things.” A multiplicity of interpretations have been given to “this generation”— humankind in general, the Jewish people, Christians, unbelievers. It seems best, however, to understand it to mean Jesus’ own generation. “All these things” then refers to the signs found in vv.5–23.
At the same time, however, since the Incarnation, Crucifixion, Resurrection, Ascension, and Parousia all belong essentially together, and since only God’s desire that everyone repent is holding back the last stage (cf. 2 Peter 3:9–10), it has always been true that the Parousia is at hand for every “this” generation. This type of thinking may be difficult for contemporary people, but seems consistent with the biblical material.
