Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary Mark 15:6

"Now at the feast he used to release unto them one prisoner, whom they asked of him." — Mark 15:6 (ASV)

The custom referred to here of releasing a prisoner at the Passover Feast is unknown outside the Gospels. Other documents confirm, however, that it was a Roman custom elsewhere and could well have been a custom in Palestine.
