Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"But she answered and saith unto him, Yea, Lord; even the dogs under the table eat of the children`s crumbs." — Mark 7:28 (ASV)
Jesus probably conversed with this woman in Greek, not Aramaic. He replied by comparing the children of the household (the privileged position of Israel) and the little dogs that were kept as household pets (less privileged Gentiles). Israel was to have the first opportunity to hear the Gospel (cf. Acts 2– 7); later would come the Gentiles’ turn. So far as this woman was concerned, the “later” time had already come, because Jesus responded compassionately to her needs. The reply of the woman was remarkable. She admitted her status but refused to believe she was thereby excluded from any benefits.
