Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary Mark 9:6

"For he knew not what to answer; for they became sore afraid." — Mark 9:6 (ASV)

This endeavor to excuse Peter’s inept remark shows Mark’s sensitive concern for Peter. He was frightened and at a loss as to what to say. So he impulsively spoke, and what he said was not worth saying.
