Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary Matthew 12:46

"While he was yet speaking to the multitudes, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, seeking to speak to him." — Matthew 12:46 (ASV)

Jesus is presumably inside the house. The “brothers” mentioned here refer most naturally to sons of Mary and Joseph and thus to brothers of Jesus on his mother’s side (contrary to the later dogma of the perpetual virginity of Mary).
