"And as they went out from Jericho, a great multitude followed him." — Matthew 20:29 (ASV)

Jericho (see comment on Mk 10:46) was not only the home of Jesus’ ancestor Rahab (1:5) but was also a day’s journey from Jerusalem. The “large crowd” implies more than messianic excitement; it also reflects the multitudes of pilgrims from Galilee and elsewhere heading to Jerusalem for the feast.
