"And Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit." — Matthew 27:50 (ASV)
This loud cry reminds us once more of Jesus’ hideous agony. That “he gave up his spirit” suggests Jesus’ sovereignty over the exact time of his own death. It was at this moment, when he was experiencing the abyss of his alienation from the Father and was being cruelly mocked by those he came to serve, that he chose to yield up his life a “ransom for many” .
