"But the Pharisees said, By the prince of the demons casteth he out demons." — Matthew 9:34 (ASV)

This is not the first intimation of direct opposition to Jesus in Matthew (vv.3, 11, 14, 24; cf. 5:10–12, 44). But the tide of opposition, which later brought Jesus to the cross, now becomes an essential part of the background to the next discourse.
