Philippians 3:19

SCRIPTURE

"whose end is perdition, whose god is the belly, and [whose] glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things." — Philippians 3:19 (ASV)

The ultimate end for such persons is “destruction” (GK 724), i.e., eternal loss. “Their god is their stomach” suggests sensualists who indulged various physical appetites without restraint (Romans 16:18; 1 Corinthians 6:13;Jude 11). By their indulgence, they actually bragged about what they ought to have been ashamed of (Ephesians 5:12). The final description characterizes these “enemies of the cross” as continually minding earthly things. Their whole attention focused on physical and material interests, rather than on spiritual things.
