Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"But I have all things, and abound: I am filled, having received from Epaphroditus the things [that came] from you, and odor of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well-pleasing to God." — Philippians 4:18 (ASV)
The financial language continues as Paul says, “I have received full payment and even more.” The gifts brought by Epaphroditus (2:25–30) had completely met his needs, and Paul considers this contribution a sacrificial offering to God, made to further the Lord’s work by helping his servant (cf. Matthew 25:40). “A fragrant offering” is used in Eph 5:2 of Christ’s sacrificial offering of himself to God on our behalf, reflecting such passages as Lev 1:9, 13, 17; 2:12. Such offerings pleased God, because they came from obedient hearts.
