Expositor's Bible Commentary Commentary
"He who testifieth these things saith, Yea: I come quickly. Amen: come, Lord Jesus." — Revelation 22:20 (ASV)
This is the third affirmation in ch. 22 of Jesus’ imminent return and perhaps the response to the longing cry in v.17. John responds to the Lord Jesus’ declaration by saying, “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.” These fervent words were part of the liturgy of the early church. They were a prayer used at the close of the meal in the eucharistic liturgy . As Jesus appeared to his disciples alive on the first day of the week, so he was expected to be present in the Spirit at every first-day Eucharist celebration and to appear again at the end, which is often represented by the picture of a messianic meal. The expression “Come, Lord Jesus” is equivalent to the Aramaic marana’ ’atah (i.e., Maranatha; cf. 1 Corinthians 16:22, “Come, O Lord”). So in closing the book of Revelation, John alludes to ch. 1, with its reference to the Lord’s Day (1:10).
