John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men." — 1 Corinthians 1:25 (ASV)
For the foolishness of God—while the Lord deals with us in such a way that He seems to act foolishly, because He does not display His wisdom, what appears as foolishness surpasses in wisdom all human ingenuity. Furthermore, while God appears to act with weakness because He conceals His power, that weakness, as it is considered, is stronger than any human power. We must, however, always keep in mind that this is a concession, as I noted a little while ago. For no one can fail to perceive that, strictly speaking, neither foolishness nor weakness can be attributed to God; rather, it was necessary, through such ironical expressions, to beat down the mad presumption of the flesh, which does not hesitate to rob God of all His glory.
