John Calvin Commentary
"Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." — 1 Corinthians 10:31 (ASV)
Whether, therefore, you eat, or drink, lest they should think that in such a small matter they should not be so careful to avoid blame, he teaches that there is no part of our life, and no action so minute, that it should not be directed to the glory of God, and that we must take care that, even in eating and drinking, we aim at its advancement.
This statement is connected with what goes before; for if we eagerly desire the glory of God, as we should, we will never allow, so far as we can prevent it, his benefits to be discredited. It was well expressed in ancient times in a common proverb that we must not live to eat; but eat to live, provided the purpose of living is also kept in view, the consequence will thus be that our food will, in a way, be sacred to God, since it will be set apart for his service.
