"I thank God, I speak with tongues more than you all:" — 1 Corinthians 14:18 (ASV)

I thank, etc. Many people tend to belittle the excellent qualities of others, especially in areas where they themselves cannot excel. To avoid any suspicion that he might be devaluing the gift of tongues out of malice or envy, Paul preempts this by demonstrating his own superiority in this very area.

He says, "See how little reason you have to suspect the purpose of my discourse, as if I were belittling something I myself lacked. For if we were to compete regarding tongues, not one of you could compare with me. However, while I could showcase my abilities in this area, I am more concerned with edification."

Paul’s teaching gains considerable weight from the fact that he is not self-seeking. However, lest he appear overly arrogant in placing himself above all others, he attributes it all to God. In this way, he balances his boasting with modesty.
