John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"What is it then, brethren? When ye come together, each one hath a psalm, hath a teaching, hath a revelation, hath a tongue, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying." — 1 Corinthians 14:26 (ASV)
What is it then? He now shows the way they may remedy those evils. In the first place, each gift must have its place, in order and in measure. Furthermore, the Church must not be occupied pointlessly with unprofitable exercises, but must, in whatever is done, aim for edification.
He speaks, however, primarily of edification in this way: “Let everyone, according to the particular gift with which he has been endowed, aim to employ it for the benefit of all.” For this is how we must understand the word translated every one—so that no one may take it as implying universality, as though every single person were endowed with such a gift.
