SCRIPTURE

"And if they would learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home: for it is shameful for a woman to speak in the church." — 1 Corinthians 14:35 (ASV)

If they wish to learn anything. So that he may not seem, by this means, to shut out women from opportunities for learning, he desires them, if they are in doubt about anything, to inquire privately, so that they may not stir up any disputation in public. When he says, husbands, he does not prohibit them from consulting the Prophets themselves, if necessary. For not all husbands are competent to give an answer in such a case. However, since he is reasoning here about external church order, he considers it sufficient to point out what is improper, so that the Corinthians may guard against it. Meanwhile, the prudent reader should consider that the matters he addresses here are intermediate and indifferent—matters in which there is nothing inherently unlawful, but only what conflicts with propriety and edification.
