SCRIPTURE

"If any man destroyeth the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, and such are ye." — 1 Corinthians 3:17 (ASV)

If any man corrupts the temple of God. He adds a dreadful threatening—that, since the temple of God ought to be inviolably sacred, that man, whoever he may be, who corrupts it, will not go unpunished.

The kind of profanation he now speaks of is when men intrude themselves to rule in the Church in God's place. For just as faith devoted to the pure doctrine of Christ is called elsewhere spiritual chastity (2 Corinthians 11:2), so it also sanctifies our souls for the right and pure worship of God. For as soon as we are tainted by human contrivances, the temple of God is polluted, as it were, with filth, because the sacrifice of faith, which He claims for Himself alone, is then offered to creatures.
