SCRIPTURE

"using hospitality one to another without murmuring:" — 1 Peter 4:9 (ASV)

Use hospitality, or, Be hospitable. After having generally exhorted them to love one another, he specifically mentions one of the duties of love. At that time, hospitality was commonly practiced, and it was considered, in a way, a sacred expression of humanity, as we have stated elsewhere. He then urges them to practice it mutually, so that no one would require more from others than what he himself was prepared to offer. He adds, without murmurings, for it is rare for someone to spend himself and his resources on his neighbor without any disparaging reflection. Therefore, the Apostle desires us to show kindness willingly and with a cheerful mind.
