John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"These things command and teach." — 1 Timothy 4:11 (ASV)
Instruct and teach these things. He means that the doctrine is of such a nature that people should not grow weary of it, even if they heard it every day. There are, no doubt, other things to be taught, but there is emphasis on the demonstrative pronoun these. This emphasis signifies that these are not matters of small importance, for which a passing and brief notice is sufficient. On the contrary, they deserve to be repeated every day, because they cannot be inculcated too much.
A prudent pastor should, therefore, consider what things are most essential, so that he may dwell on them. Nor is there reason to dread that this repetition will become wearisome, for whoever is of God will gladly and frequently hear those things that need to be uttered so often.
