John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"In like manner also there are good works that are evident; and such as are otherwise cannot be hid." — 1 Timothy 5:25 (ASV)
In like manner also the good works: He means that sometimes piety and other virtues quickly obtain applause among people, so that great individuals are held in high regard; and that, if it happens otherwise, the Lord will not allow innocence and uprightness to be always oppressed. For it is often obscured by slander or by clouds, but eventually the prediction (Daniel 12:3; Matthew 13:43) will be fulfilled: that God will cause them to shine forth like the dawn of the day.
But we need a calm spirit to endure. Therefore, we must always consider the limit of our knowledge, so that we do not go beyond it. For that would be to assume for ourselves the prerogative of God.
