SCRIPTURE

"For we stretch not ourselves overmuch, as though we reached not unto you: for we came even as far as unto you in the gospel of Christ:" — 2 Corinthians 10:14 (ASV)

For we do not overstretch. He alludes to people who either forcibly stretch out their arms or stand on tiptoe when wanting to grasp what is not within their reach, for such is the nature of a greedy thirst for glory; indeed, it is often more disgusting.

For ambitious people do not merely stretch out their arms and stand on tiptoe, but are even driven headlong in order to obtain some pretext for glorying. He subtly implies that his rivals were of this kind.

He later declares on what basis he had come to the Corinthians—namely, because he had founded their church through his ministry. Therefore, he says, in the gospel of Christ; for he had not come to them empty-handed but had been the first to bring the gospel to them. The preposition in is interpreted by some in another way, as they render it by the gospel, and this meaning is not unsuitable. At the same time, Paul seems to emphasize the significance of his coming to the Corinthians, because he had been equipped with so precious a gift.
