John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill and eat." — Acts 10:13 (ASV)
A voice from heaven. The voice came from heaven, just as the sheet did, so that Peter might know that both came from God. For the sight would have done him no good, unless God, with this voice, had made clean those things that were previously unclean.
Whereas some derive an allegory from the word "kill"—as if God signified that men are sacrificed to Him by the spiritual sword of the gospel—I do not pursue that interpretation. Plainness pleases me more: namely, that God by this voice takes away the law concerning the choice of animals, so that He may also teach that He rejects no people (Romans 15:16). For if the former word means sacrificing, what then will eat signify?
