John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter," — Acts 10:46 (ASV)
For they heard them. He expresses what gifts of the Spirit were poured out upon them, and along with that he notes the use; namely, that they had a variety of tongues given to them, so that they glorified God with many tongues. Also, it may be gathered from this passage that the tongues were given to them not only for necessity, since the gospel was to be preached to foreigners and to people of other languages, but also to be an adornment for the gospel and to bring it honor.
But ambition afterward corrupted this second use, because many turned what they had received to display the dignity of heavenly wisdom into pomp and vainglory, as Paul sharply reproves this fault in the Corinthians. Therefore, it is no wonder if God shortly afterward took away what He had given, and did not allow it to be corrupted by longer abuse.
