John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"And he went forth to Tarsus to seek for Saul;" — Acts 11:25 (ASV)
Barnabas’s simplicity is commended to us now the second time: although he might have wielded the greatest influence at Antioch, yet he went into Cilicia to fetch Paul from there, whom he knew would be preferred over him. Therefore, we see how, forgetting himself, he values nothing except that Christ may be chief; how he sets before his eyes the edification of the Church alone; how he is content with the prosperous success of the gospel. Therefore, Barnabas is not at all afraid that Paul might in any way diminish him by his coming, so that Christ may be glorified.
