John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"And with these sayings scarce restrained they the multitudes from doing sacrifice unto them." — Acts 14:18 (ASV)
When they had said this. Luke said before that they not only used words, but they also ran with violence into the multitude. Now he adds that the fury of the people was scarcely appeased by that vehemence, which shows how mad and untamed the world's passion is toward idolatry.
For if they believe them to be gods, why do they not believe their word, by which they reject false honor? But all idolaters suffer from this sickness: they are often ready to shake off the yoke, unless religion is subject to their will and pleasure. Therefore, it is no wonder if the prophets often say that men are carried away by a blind devotion to superstitions, just as brute beasts are carried away by their lust.
