John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"And when Paul was minded to enter in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not." — Acts 19:30 (ASV)
And when Paul would. We may see that Paul’s steadfastness was combined with modesty. Although he could very well have kept himself out of sight, he was prepared of his own accord to put himself in danger. Yet he does not refuse to follow the advice of those who understood the situation better than he did.
If he had not been restrained, what he had resolved to do could not have been attributed to rashness. No uprising was caused by his fault. Why should he not risk his life, especially since he did not lose hope for a better outcome? But when the brothers and more discerning friends dissuade him, his modesty is commendable, in that he does not rigidly adhere to his purpose.
