John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"And after these days we took up our baggage and went up to Jerusalem." — Acts 21:15 (ASV)
When we had taken up our burdens. Paul’s companions declare that when they tried to dissuade Paul from danger, they cared more for the common safety of the Church than each man for his own life. For after they were rebuffed, they did not refuse to share the same danger with him, even though they had a plausible excuse that they were bound by no law to be dragged to suffer death because of one man’s stubbornness.
And this truly is bringing our affections into subjection to God, when we are not deterred by any fear, but each of us endeavors, as much as he is able, to promote what we know pleases Him. Also, the great fervency of godliness in the others appears more plainly, who of their own accord accompanied him and offered him hospitality, even though they might well have feared many hardships.
