John Calvin Commentary
"What is it therefore? They will certainly hear that thou art come." — Acts 21:22 (ASV)
The multitude must needs come together. The verb is intransitive, as if to say, the multitude must necessarily come together. For it would have been an absurd thing for an apostle of such great renown not to appear before the entire multitude of the faithful. For if he had avoided public view, the unfavorable suspicion might have increased.
Nevertheless, we see how modestly the elders conducted themselves in nourishing concord, when they forestalled the people's offense in time, although perhaps they bore too much with their infirmity in requiring a vow from Paul.
But this moderation must be maintained in the Church: pastors should have great authority, and yet they should not rule proudly as lords, nor despise the rest of the body. For the distinction of orders, which is the bond of peace, should not be any cause of dissension.
