John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"And when it was shown to me that there would be a plot against the man, I sent him to thee forthwith, charging his accusers also to speak against him before thee." — Acts 23:30 (ASV)
When it was showed to me. This is the second part of the letter, in which the chief captain brings the adversaries into contempt because they treacherously sought to kill Paul. From this it is also gathered that they trouble Paul unjustly, and that they sought so intensely to take his life without any cause. For if they had persecuted him lawfully, they would have trusted in the goodness of their cause, and would not have permitted him to be judged according to law. Now, since they seek to kill him, it appears that they have no justification.
