John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"And some believed the things which were spoken, and some disbelieved." — Acts 28:24 (ASV)
Some believed. Luke declares that this was ultimately the outcome of the disputation: not all of them profited from the same doctrine. We know that the apostle was endowed with such grace of the Spirit that he should have been able to move stones; yet, even after long disputing and testifying, he could not win all people to Christ. Therefore, let us not be surprised if the unbelief of many today resists the plain doctrine of the gospel, and if many remain obstinate, to whom the truth of Christ is made no less manifest than the sun at noon.
Moreover, those who came to Paul willingly, as if they desired to learn, returned from him blind and dull. If there was such stubbornness in voluntary hearers, is it any wonder that those refuse Christ with a malicious mind, who swell with pride and malice (bitterness) and openly flee and hate the light?
