SCRIPTURE

"[And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, having much disputing among themselves.]" — Acts 28:29 (ASV)

Having much reasoning. No doubt, the wicked were more irritated because he cited the prophecy against them; for they are so far from becoming meek when they are rebuked, that they are more inflamed with rage. This is the reason why they argued when they had left Paul, because most of them would not be quiet.

But since there was such dispute, it appears that some so embraced what Paul had spoken, that they did not hesitate to defend and firmly to affirm what they believed.

But it is futile, therefore, for anyone to object that the gospel of Christ is the seed of contention, which undoubtedly comes from human pride and stubbornness; and certainly, if we want to have peace with God, we must strive against those who despise him.
