John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"The kings of the earth set themselves in array, And the rulers were gathered together, Against the Lord, and against his Anointed:" — Acts 4:26 (ASV)
Against the Lord, and his Christ. The Spirit teaches by this word that all those who refuse to submit themselves to Christ make war against God. They often give little thought to this; nevertheless, it is true that because God will reign in the person of His Son alone, we refuse to obey Him whenever we rebel against Christ. As the Lord Himself says in John, He who honors not the Son, honors not the Father. (John) Therefore, let hypocrites profess a thousand times that they intend nothing less than to make war against God, yet they will find this true: God is their open enemy, unless they embrace Christ with His gospel.
The use of this doctrine is twofold: for it arms us against all the terrors of the flesh, because we need not fear that those who withstand the gospel will gain victory over God. Again, we must beware lest, through contempt for godly doctrine, we advance against God to our own destruction.
