John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"But they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed upon him with one accord;" — Acts 7:57 (ASV)
Crying with a loud voice. This was either a vain show of zeal, as hypocrites are almost always spurred on by ambition to break out into uncontrolled fervor; just as Caiaphas, when he heard Christ say, After this you shall see the Son of man, etc., tore his clothes as a sign of indignation, as if it were intolerable blasphemy; or else, certainly, the preaching of the glory of Christ was such a torment to them that they had to erupt in madness. And I am more inclined to this latter view; for Luke says later that they were driven by violent impulse, like those who have no self-control and are accustomed to lash out excessively.
