SCRIPTURE

"But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached the gospel to all the cities, till he came to Caesarea." — Acts 8:40 (ASV)

He was found at Azotus. It is well known from the book of Joshua 11:22, that Azotus was one of the cities from which the sons of Anak could not be expelled. It is distant from Ascalon almost two hundred furlongs; the Hebrews call it Ashdod.

To that place Philip was carried; there he began his journey on foot like other people, sowing the seed of the gospel wherever he went.

This is surely rare and wonderful resolve, that he spreads the name of godliness in his journey.

And since Luke says expressly that he preached in all cities until he came to Caesarea, and does not state that he returned to Samaria, from this we may conjecture that he stayed at Caesarea for a time; yet I leave this undecided.
