John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"and he hath seen a man named Ananias coming in, and laying his hands on him, that he might receive his sight." — Acts 9:12 (ASV)
He saw a man, named Ananias. It is uncertain whether Luke is still repeating the words of Christ, or if he adds this himself. Those who interpret this as Luke speaking are troubled by a seeming absurdity, because it seems unlikely that Christ would have used these words.
However, this objection can be easily answered: namely, that Christ reassures Ananias in this manner: "You have no reason to fear, for he will receive you willingly, since he already knows your appearance from a vision. I have also told him your name, and whatever you will do with him."
Yet, the reader may choose whichever view they prefer.
