SCRIPTURE

"and here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call upon thy name." — Acts 9:14 (ASV)

He has power to bind. We gather from these words that the fame of the persecution which Saul carried out was spread far and wide; for this reason, his conversion was more famous. Nevertheless, the Lord allowed the faithful to be mistreated, so that the benefit of such a sudden deliverance might afterwards be even more excellent.

We must note that statement, when he says that the godly call upon the name of Christ. For whether you understand it that, since they professed that they were Christ's, they therefore rejoiced in him, or that they used to turn to him for help, invocation cannot be without sure confidence. By both of these, the divinity of Christ is not only proved, but also, if the second interpretation is accepted, which seems to be more natural, we are taught by the example of the faithful to call upon the name of Christ when he is preached to us.
