John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"So the king of the north shall come, and cast up a mound, and take a well-fortified city: and the forces of the south shall not stand, neither his chosen people, neither shall there be any strength to stand." — Daniel 11:15 (ASV)
The angel follows up with the same sentiment. He says that when Antiochus the Great will burst forth, there will be no valor in the Egyptians to resist him, for he will take a fortified city. There is a change of number here, for he means fortified cities. For Antiochus would recover the cities he had formerly lost and would arrive at the city Raphia in Egypt.
The explanation follows: The arms of Egypt shall not stand, nor the people of its levies. This relates to Scopas, who was sent out with large forces. At first he prospered, but he was later defeated in the conflict and lacked the courage to continue resisting.
