SCRIPTURE

"that thou mayest bear thine own shame, and mayest be ashamed because of all that thou hast done, in that thou art a comfort unto them." — Ezekiel 16:54 (ASV)

Therefore, we gather from the last verse that God gave the Jews no hope of safety, but rather confirmed their utter destruction, so that no future safety could be hoped for. For he says, that you may bear your reproach and become ashamed; that is, because they had sinned severely, as I have said before, and had not repented of their wickedness.

He adds, in consoling them. He speaks as people commonly do, since miserable people feel some consolation when they see themselves perish along with a great multitude. This, then, is the consolation of which the Prophet speaks—not that the sorrow of Sodom and Samaria was lessened when they saw the Jews joined with them, but, as I have said, God uses common human language.
