SCRIPTURE

"And Pharaoh gave men charge concerning him: and they brought him on the way, and his wife, and all that he had." — Genesis 12:20 (ASV)

And Pharaoh commanded his men. In giving the command that Abram should have safe-conduct out of the kingdom, Pharaoh might seem to have done this to guard against danger. This was because Abram had stirred up the nation's hatred against himself, as one who had brought the scourge of God there with him. But since this conjecture has little substance, I offer the simpler interpretation: leave to depart was granted to Abram with the addition of a guard, lest he be exposed to violence. For we know how proud and cruel the Egyptians were, and how subject Abram was to envy, because, having become suddenly rich there, he would seem to be carrying spoil away with him.
