John Calvin Commentary
"And tarry with him a few days, until thy brother`s fury turn away." — Genesis 27:44 (ASV)
And tarry with him a few days. This circumstance lessens the severity of banishment. For the shortness of the time of suffering greatly helps to support us in adversity. And it was probable that Esau's enmity would not prove so stubborn as to remain unsoothed by his brother’s absence.
In the Hebrew expression translated as “a few days,” the word few is literally “one” used in the plural. Rebekah means that as soon as Jacob had gone away of his own accord, the memory of the offense would be erased from Esau's mind. It was as if she had said, “Only depart from here for a little while, and we will soon calm his anger.”
