"And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast." — Genesis 29:22 (ASV)

And Laban gathered together. Moses does not mean that a supper was prepared for all the people, but that many guests were invited, as is customary in splendid nuptials; and there is no doubt that he applied himself more earnestly to adorn that feast, to hold Jacob bound by a sense of shame, so that he would not dare to disparage the marriage into which he had been deceived.

From this, we gather what the religious observance connected with the marriage bed was at that time. For this was the reason for Jacob’s deception: out of regard for the modesty of brides, they were led veiled into the chamber; but now, with that ancient discipline rejected, men become almost brutal.
