John Calvin Commentary

John Calvin Commentary
"And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen; and they gat them possessions therein, and were fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly." — Genesis 47:27 (ASV)
And Israel dwelt in the land. Moses does not mean that Jacob and his sons were owners of the land Pharaoh had granted them as a dwelling-place, in the same way that other parts of Egypt were given to the inhabitants for perpetual possession. Instead, they lived there comfortably for a time, possessing it by favor, provided they remained peaceable. This is why they increased so greatly in a very short time.
Therefore, what is related here by Moses belongs to the history of the following period. He now returns to the main thread of his narrative, in which he intended to show how God protected His Church from many deaths, and not only that, but also wonderfully exalted it by His own secret power.
